1:00pm | Hudson Hall Room 208

Presenter

Dr. Tuan Vo-Dinh (co-hosted with Dr. Adam Wax) , R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Professor of Chemistry, Director of the Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics

Dr. Tuan Vo-Dinh, Director of the FIP, will provide an overview of the FIP research program, which includes: Biophotonics, Nanophotonics, Nano and Micro Integrated Systems, Quantum Optics and Information Photonics, Advanced Photonics Systems and Materials, Novel Spectroscopies, and Systems Modeling Techniques Theory & Data Treatment. As a synergistic collaboration between various faculty members of the institute is one of the main goals, the FIP has established the Fitzpatrick and Chambers Scholars programs in order to promote interdisciplinary collaborations within the FIP community.  In addition, the FIP Fellowships program has been established to attract talented potential students to the graduate research program in photonics at Duke. The institute has established the FIP Breakfast series in an effort to enable closer interactions and networking among faculty, students, postdocs, and staff within the institute. The FIP Seminar Series is designed to invite distinguished outside speakers as well as internal Duke investigators to present the latest advances in their field of research. Highlights of the FIP Annual Symposia will be presented, and Dr. Vo-Dinh will also discuss the International Year of Light in 2015 (IYL2015) as proclaimed by the United Nations.

Dr. Adam Wax, Professor in BME and Director of Graduate Studies, will speak briefly about the Certificate in Photonics for MS and PhD students as well as the Master of Engineering Photonics and Optical Sciences program. Both of these initiatives are core to FIP’s goal of providing students with resources and opportunities to support their research and education for productive careers.
