PhotoPlethysmoGraphy : Beyond oxygen saturation and heart rate determination..
Kirk Shelley, MD, PhD
Professor of Anesthesiology and Chief of Ambulatory Anesthesia Division
Yale University School of Medicine
First discovered in the 1930s, the photoplethysmograph (PPG) has had a remarkable impact on patient monitoring. It is the core technology that enabled the invention of the pulse oximeter. In recent years advancements in digital signal processing, combined with new understandings of cardiovascular physiology, has allowed for a re-examination of this ubiquitous waveform. This lecture will examine these new frontiers and speculate about the future potential avenues of investigation.
